Empire’s Success, but
on Steroids!
Ratings; 5 stars.
Fox Entertainment’s renewal of Empire Season one has come in
the wake of colossal success witnessed at the end of the premiere season which
ended a few months ago. The mega series drew attention from all continents -
yes!
All five of them and left close to no chance for haters because,
as some critics would say, it told the world story in a single go.
This attention is
attributed to the fact that it captured the reality of most societies, talk
about marriage qualms, relationship squabbles, power wars, money matters,
succession battles, sexual orientation – and the tussle between denial and
acceptance, music, racism, drugs, and gangs to mention just but a few. These
are the selling points that have got Empire staying on point.
Here’s a bit of the plot; the second season starts with
Jamal Lyon as the head of Empire, after Lucious Lyon (his father) has been
arrested for the murder of Bunkie (his long time buddy), and Cookie Lyon (his
mother), Andre Lyon (his brother), Hakeem Lyon (his brother) and Anika are
working in cahoots with Tricky Trickster to stage a hostile takeover. The takeover
goes south when Mimi Whitemann, the white investor backs out of the deal at the
last minute leaving the rest of the band wagon twisted and utterly
disappointed.
Now that bit got me on the edge of my seat! This is due to
the apparent fact that most villains thought that Jamal (being gay), would be
all sissy about it and hand over Empire on a silver platter. When this wasn’t
the case, I sat back comfortably convinced that Lucious must have had a hand in
that melee, and as sure as night follows day he did.
This is how to deliver a kick ass series… carry the minds of
the viewers to the point that their hopes are almost achieved, try and satisfy
most of their hopes by introducing minor scenes that tend to point toward their
inevitable end, then and only then must you grossly violate their expectation
by changing tact and fitting in your mischievous grand plan.
This call was well deserved, bravado to Lee Daniels for
pulling this through.
This series depicts an uncensored and delirious fantasy of
power and money being thrown around like salad. It is only in empire that
murders and mergers go hand in hand. Pleasure is synonymous to business at the
very least.
Stay put for part 2
